Trump Credits Divine Intervention for Surviving Assassination Attempt

Trump says God alone prevented the unthinkable.

Former President Donald Trump is crediting divine intervention for sparing his life after a gunman’s bullet, intended for his head, grazed his ear instead. The incident occurred on Saturday when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks positioned himself on a nearby building with a high-powered rifle, aiming directly at Trump. The bullet narrowly missed its mark by less than half an inch.

Law enforcement is still investigating the motive behind what is being described as the most serious assassination attempt on a president or former president since 1981 when Ronald Reagan was shot but survived. Trump’s life was potentially saved by a last-second turn of his head, which seemingly prevented the bullet from striking him directly.

On his Truth Social account, Trump expressed gratitude and remained resolute.

“Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” Trump wrote. “We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness. Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”

As Trump prepares to accept the Republican Party’s nomination this week in his bid to become the first president since Grover Cleveland to serve two non-consecutive terms, he is reflecting on the significance of the moment.

“At this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined and not allowing Evil to Win,” he said. “I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”

Trump revealed to the Washington Examiner that he survived the assassination attempt because he turned his head to the right at the last moment to glance at a screen displaying data.

“That reality is just setting in,” he said. “I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that at that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

In light of the event, Trump is rewriting his upcoming speech, shifting its focus from his opponent, President Biden, to a message of unity.

“It is a chance to bring the country together,” he told the Examiner. “I was given that chance.”

He added, “This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago.”

As he left the stage surrounded by Secret Service agents on Saturday, Trump turned to the crowd, raised his fist, and mouthed the word “Fight.”

Reflecting on that moment, he told the Examiner, “The energy coming from the people there at that moment, they just stood there; it’s hard to describe what that felt like, but I knew the world was looking. I knew that history would judge this, and I knew I had to let them know we are OK.”

Trump is not the first president or former president to attribute his survival to divine intervention. Former President Ronald Reagan, who was shot by John Hinckley Jr on March 30, 1981, credited God for his survival in his March 31 diary entry: “Whatever happens now, I owe my life to God and will try to serve him in every way I can.” Reagan also forgave his shooter while recovering in the hospital.
